There is a calculation method for choosing the right chandelier. Let’s say you are using a chandelier above your dining table, measure the width and length of your table. Let’s say the width of your table is 120 cm. Divide this in half, then add 22 cm. It will come out 82 cm. This shows the size your chandelier should be.

If you are going to use a chandelier in a small room, be sure to have 4 or 8 arms. In large spaces, you can choose ones with 8 or more arms. However, do not use bulbs with very high wattages in a chandelier with many arms. 25-watt bulbs will do the trick.

After connecting the cable ends, clip them and gather them to fit into the mirror.

Fix the mirror to the wall, but leave an opening to make the necessary corrections.

Pendant lights have a longer cord than necessary. Mark and shorten how much you will shorten after hanging the chandelier.

Connect the cables through the mirror and snap the mirror into place.

All they really need is a little bit of TLC. There’s more than one way to disguise that ugly old sofa and each of these tips will help give your room the decorating facelift it so desperately needs.

Use a slipcover

Slipcovers are perfect for hiding each and every aspect of an ugly couch. Because they cover the entire sofa, your guests will be none the wiser of the ugliness that lies underneath. Slipcovers are made from many types of fabrics and come in a plethora of patterns to go with almost any decor theme.

Some slipcovers are one solid piece that cover the entire couch, while others come in separate pieces. Any slipcover you’re looking at will have measurements on the package, so make sure to measure your couch to find the one that will fit it perfectly.

Cover it with a blanket

Drape your couch with a beautiful flag throw, like the one we see here, or an afghan, or try an unusual textile that will add character to your space. These items impart a splash of colour to your room and take all the attention away from your ugly couch.

Adorn it with colourful pillows

If the colour is your biggest issue, buy some upholstery paint and get the colour you’ve always wanted. Turn your ugly, out-of-style green sofa into a sleek, black, modern one that’s adorned with strikingly colourful accent pillows.

Upholstery paint comes in a spray can and will instantly and considerably change the appearance of your sofa and room. The paint dries soft and won’t rub off, but you have to make sure you let it dry for a full 72 hours before you use it. As a precautionary measure, test your spray on an unobtrusive area just to see if you’ll get the result you desire.

And if you’re a particularly artistic person, here’s where your imagination and creativity can run wild! You could paint your couch with patterns or images instead of something monochrome. Each of these tips are super easy and relatively affordable for anyone looking to hide that ugly sofa. Try one tip, or combine a few and see where things take.

When moving into a rental, there are some things you just know are going to be pretty ugly. Like those all-too-common folding doors, for example (we’ve got a fix for that!) or standard-issue, chintzy metal doorknobs. In my apartment, I’m lucky to have multiple closets—the downside? Multiple ugly, cheap-looking metal doorknobs. The good news, though? Swapping these out takes just about 10 minutes and a Phillips head screwdriver. So, even if you’re not cursed with ugly rental knobs—and just want to switch things up in your home—here’s how to easily swap out doorknobs for a new look.

What You’ll Need:

Measure and select knob

By now, if you’ve read any DIY, you know they basically all start the same: Measure, measure, measure. Luckily, as doorknobs go, many are a standard size so can easily be swapped, but it’s always good to make sure. Once you know what size knob you’ll need, pick your new one.

Remove old knob

Depending on the knob you have this might be the trickiest part. Some knobs (like mine) just have two screws on the inside plate. If that’s the case, simply unscrew those and then gently pull the knobs apart from each other. If your knob doesn’t have visible screws, it likely has a hidden latch holding it in place. Look for a small groove at the base of the knob, and press into it with the tip of a pen or tweezers. This should remove the knob and reveal a screw. Unscrew and remove knobs.

Remove faceplate and latch

Next up: the other components of a doorknob that aren’t the doorknob. Unscrew the faceplate (the little metal piece on the edge of the door itself, which the latch or bolt sticks through). Once this is off, you should be able to gently pull the latch (and any interior mechanism) through the hole.

Remove strike plate

Now, in addition to your knob, there is a metal plate on the door frame where the latch hits—that’s called the strike plate. It will be held in place with screws. Remove that as well.

Install new faceplate

Now, to install the new knob, you’re essentially going to work in reverse. So, begin with your last step on the old knob. Lay the faceplate over the latch and interior mechanism, thread it through the existing hole in the door, and screw into place. Note: Some doorknobs have a plastic piece that holds the interior parts in place while installing—this is not necessary and if you don’t have it, you’ll be fine.

Next, determine which is the front or outer-facing knob (it will have a different spindle that threads through the door). Line that up and hold it in place while…

Install back of new knob

Line up the back, or interior knob so it aligns with the front one and you can press both flush to the door (this is where that plastic piece helps—if you don’t have that, just make sure both knobs can be flush to the door and turn). Now, holding them in place, screw the back plate in until it’s tight. Test that you can turn the knob from both sides.

Install new strike plate

Finally, install your new strike plate on your door frame.

Keep all your spices and dry cooking ingredients like pasta, rice, and flour somewhere easy to reach while you’re working without having to keep labels and packaging out the open by transferring them to prettier containers. This way, you can also stay organized with labels.
