<p>But both of these origin stories have a few chronological problems. Katz&#8217;s Deli has long dated its founding to 1888, the year when two immigrant brothers, Morris and Hyman Iceland, supposedly opened a Lower East Side delicatessen called Iceland Brothers. It is said to have become &#8220;Iceland &amp; Katz&#8221; when Willy Katz bought into the firm in 1903, and then just &#8220;Katz&#8217;s Delicatessen&#8221; in 1910. But city directories and immigration records show that the Icelands didn&#8217;t actually arrive in the United States until 1902, and Hyman Iceland didn&#8217;t open his original delicatessen on East Houston Street until 1911. <p>The second belonged to Sussman Volk, who emigrated to New York City from Lithuania and opened a butcher shop on the Lower East Side. One day in 1887, the story goes, a Romanian friend stopped in to ask a favor before departing for a visit to his home country. In exchange for storage of his trunk during his travels, the Romanian offered Volk the secret recipe for his renowned pastrami. Volk agreed, and he promptly started making and selling the meat in his butcher shop. It was an immediate hit, and soon customers were ordering pastrami by the slice and asking for bread to put it on. Volk took over the shop next door at 88 Delancey Street, put in some tables, and created the first New York deli.</p>

If the rice is cooked but there is still some stock in the skillet, uncover the pan and let the extra stock cook off for a few minutes.</p>
<p>When the rice seems just about done, add the frozen peas to the skillet. They will thaw quickly!</p>
<p>Serve! Garnish finished chicken and rice skillet with parsley.</p>
<p>Reheating leftovers: Leftovers keep great in the fridge for up to five days. Reheat in the microwave in 30-second bursts on high or in a skillet over medium-low heat with a splash of water. You can also freeze the chicken and rice for up to three months.</p>

This is an Istanbul based international food conference that speaks about the food issues. The third conference was held on October 21 at the Sakıp Sabancı Museum, and this time the subject of &#8220;extinction&#8221; was discussed. Like last year, the main sponsor of the conference this year was Grundig. During the day, impressive speakers shared their projects and stories in the hall, where approximately 300 people gathered. They inspired to protect and preserve the environment, culture and food. The garden of the museum near the Bosphorus was transformed into a very different dining area for that day. A container with a kitchen was placed at the entrance, seating areas were prepared from pallets. I feel there is more than enough to do in the kitchen at this time of year, so I try to keep such celebratory meals easy to deal with. I am not a great one for planning in advance and I have no intention of being a slave to a fantasy kitchen timetable, but I do believe it is worth getting a few things made the day before. Money in the bank so to speak. This is as straightforward as baking a batch of oat and marmalade slices the night before; a hash made with potatoes that were cooked earlier, and that gorgeous trifle is much better for a night in the fridge.</p>
<p>If those in the kitchen are to enjoy themselves – and we must – there should probably be a certain ease to making a holiday breakfast. The best sort of breakfast food and drink is that which will wait happily for late risers. A main course that will keep warm in fine condition and much else that can be made in advance. The recipes that follow tick all the above boxes, ensuring a fine start to the day, whetting our appetites for pleasures to come.</p>

<p>How to store takoyaki?<br />
You might be wondering, how long does takoyaki last in the fridge? If you happen to make extra, you can keep it in the fridge in a covered container for a day or two and heat it up in the microwave but it won’t taste as good as fresh, especially if it has all the sauces on it. What you should do, if you have extra batter is just put everything in the fridge as is and then make takoyaki again, fresh, the next time you want to eat it. The batter and toppings should last up to two days in the fridge.</p>

3 cups bread flour or 360g all purpose flour + 3.57g vital wheat gluten<br />
3/4 tsp salt<br />
1/4 cup unsalted butter room temp<br />
2/3 cup dark brown sugar lightly packed<br />
1.5 tbsp ground cinnamon<br />
4 oz cream cheese room temp<br />
3 tbsp unsalted butter room temp<br />
3/4 cup powdered sugar<br />
1/2 tsp vanilla extract optional</p>
<p>Instructions<br />
In the bowl of an electric mixer, add the milk and sprinkle on the yeast. Let sit until the yeast starts to foam, 1-2 minutes. Stir in the sugar, egg, egg yolk, and melted butter then stir in the flour and salt with a wooden spoon until everything comes together into a ball of dough.<br />
Knead with the dough hook on medium for 8 minutes. Alternately, knead by hand for 8-10 minutes on a floured surface. Lightly oil and large bowl and place the dough inside.</p>

There’s no denying it, these guys have a lot of sugar in them. But, because they’re most all all sugar, they keep for a really long time. Make sure they’re in an air tight container and keep them at room temp – they’ll stay soft and squishy for up to 3 weeks.</p>
<p>I hope you have a chance to make these little guys! They are so worth it as a pick-me up on a random winter afternoon. Their little faces melting will definitely make you squee with the cuteness.</p>

<div>It’s difficult to capture the true vibrance and silkiness of this fresh sauce in photos. Mine don’t do it justice. I actually skipped over this recipe in the book, but then I saw it again in The New York Times. The technique reminded me somewhat of these spinach-stuffed shells, so I was intrigued. Both recipes briefly cook greens in boiling water before transforming them into something more enticing.</div>
<div>Testing notes: America’s Test Kitchen recommends just three tablespoons of dairy and Bon Appetit recommends 1/2 cup. I tried both and slightly preferred the America’s Test Kitchen version, so I opted for the lower amount.<br />
Pre-cook your vegetables, and use a lot of them<br />
Vegetables should be tender, seasoned and cooked before adding the eggs. Raw vegetables release too much water and won’t be fully cooked by the time the eggs are done. Pre-cook your vegetables by sautéing, roasting, or steaming them to bring out their best qualities.</div>

Have you ever had an amazing frittata? The perfect frittata is creamy, custardy, and full of veggies. It is not dry, sponge-like or bland.</p>
<p>Frittatas are the ultimate clean-out-the-fridge weeknight dinner or weekend brunch recipe. Frittatas also transport well, so you can bring slices to picnics or pack them up for work lunches.</p>
<p>I made sure to use a reasonable oven temperature (not the broiler) and suggest cooking the frittata on the middle rack, so you can watch it while it cooks. Life’s too short for burnt frittatas! The baked options are particularly great if you need a make-ahead option or when your stovetop is otherwise occupied.</p>
