The Danish Art of Happiness: Hygge

Warmth, comfort, peace, sincerity… We all need these concepts lately. Then meet Hygge…

Hygge is one of the newest trends of recent months. It is a brand new concept that you may have heard, maybe you have not heard before. Pronounced as Huggah in Turkish, this word means a kind of Danish art of living. It was also selected as one of the finalist words of the year in the Oxford dictionary. It is spreading so rapidly that it seems to be talked about a lot in 2017. So much so that it is possible to reach millions of posts already entered with this tag on Instagram. In fact, considering that it comes from a country that does not lose the first place in the rankings of the happiest countries in the world, it is perhaps useful to take the Hygge philosophy seriously.

This concept, unique to Danish culture, was born from the warm atmosphere of long and cold Scandinavian nights spent with friends around candlelight. Over time, it has turned into a life philosophy that expresses much more. Candles include a fragrant environment, shared friendships, a quality but simple life, long food conversations, a warm blanket, in short, all the simple pleasures of life that make you feel good. The important thing is to live by focusing on the little happiness. Maybe a porcelain cup that you will have a different pleasure from drinking your tea when you take it in your hand, or maybe the moment when you find peace by reading a book under that colorful blanket your grandmother knitted … In short, to know the value of those moments away from showiness, to consciously feel those moments, to learn to enjoy soothing and elegant things. is coming; because the more these moments increase, the more happiness increases.

Today, it is possible to see the reflection of this concept, which has become a lifestyle for the Danes, in many areas such as design, decoration and fashion. So much so that two books on this philosophy (The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living and How to Hygge: The Secrets of Nordic Living) have even been translated into foreign languages.

It may seem a little difficult in our country to give the full right to Hygge moments, where sincerity and tranquility combine. However, I am sure that taking care to feel the elegant moments surrounded by this simplicity, to reproduce as much as possible, to discover your own Hygge moments and to establish a different connection with life is exactly what we all need now… Then Hyg dig! (Enjoy!)
