In the midst of a worldwide crisis, this Spring/Summer 2021 season was inevitably something of a reply to current events. Whether they decided to unveil their collections physically or digitally, designers presented their own versions of a strong humanity, full of hope and respect. We saw more restrained, less outrageous fashion, with a return to styles reminiscent of the 1990s, complete with clean minimalism and unisex designs that fit perfectly with all styles, genders, and generations. This translated as pieces that were as chic as they were intelligent, expertly blending form, function, the current era and that extra je ne sais quoi. In other words? The collections celebrated desire and distilled the spirit of a sector full of perseverance and creativity. The designers continue to carry out their primary mission: making us dream. Here, we reveal the most noteworthy trends of Spring/Summer 2021.
What are the key trends for Spring/Summer 2021? To get ahead, Vogue unpacks the 13 sure-fire fashion moods to know for next season.
The 1990s
Simple, but still sexy, unisex styles, with sharp, graphic lines, barely veiled transparency and different takes on strappy details were presented. There is no doubt that the 1990s are making their comeback. A contemporary and tailor-made tribute to the legendary Helmut Lang, inventor of enlightened minimalism is de rigueur this season.
Masks
From now on, masks are an integral part of everyday life in 2020. From the mask matching a bodysuit and worn under a cap and visor by Marine Serre to the multifunctional turtleneck sweater by Balenciaga, and finally the veils at Rick Owens, the designers are ever more creative in ensuring that the new essential of human safety is also fashionable.
Candy
Candy is at the head of the pack of this season’s trends. Sugary candy tones from cherry to raspberry bring some rose-tinted energy to summer.
Silver
The common denominator of the Paco Rabanne, Burberry and Louis Vuitton fashion shows? A silvery glow. The new wardrobe combines new energy and old classics resulting in a barrage of sequins, moveable spikes and sexy ribbing in mesh and crystals.
Leather
Forget the blazer, this season the biker jacket is making its comeback, in three different versions: with logo print at Chanel, sporty with a bourgeois twist at Celine, and futuristic and oversized version at Louis Vuitton.
Short shorts
The shorter the better! This piece was the statement of the season from the Dior, Isabel Marant and Miu Miu shows, which all unveiled a micro version of this summer classic. The look is somewhere between high-waisted panties and shorts.
Minimalism
With quintessential, luxurious materials and smooth lines, at Chloé, Prada and Sportmax, minimalism took on a 1990s look in all-white.
Romantic dresses
Valentino, Dior and Isabel Marant all subscribed to a romantic bohemian style. Not an ounce of folklore was present, just sheer grace and long transparent dresses with shimmering movements – a true celebration of femininity.
Balloon sleeves
A variation on a decidedly popular theme, fashion continued to play with shoulders and sleeves. Here, puffy and gathered variations were injected with exaggerated volume.
Low rise
Incredible but true, the low-rise pant is making its comeback. The hips were once again revealed thanks to triumphantly daring profiles, introducing us to the new businesswoman, with extra sensuality, inspired by a reinvented office wear trend.
Fishnet
Encasing the silhouette in a joyful style, the fishnet dress is making a seasonal comeback with a decidedly 1990s aesthetic. It is graphic and minimalist, with raw yet chic flexibility imposing an ultra-contemporary rhythm.
Tracksuits
The tracksuit was also treated to a 1990s vibe. Raw sportswear effects and tech materials were played off against couture sophistication to play everything down. Now we can dare to wear tracksuit pants in the city, day or night.
Neo logos
Although it had been looking like 2020 was to spell the end of the logomania trend, the Spring/Summer 2021 season decided otherwise and unveiled new fashion statements in favor of collages, patchworks or neon effects. In any case, this modernity takes pleasure in playing with all styles and colors in fun streetwear looks.
Workwear
The runways sang a timeless ode to the workwear wardrobe in shades of beige and off white with ultra graphic details like pockets, belts or rivets. Pieces as chic as they were functional married practicality and form.
